BATTLING BOXER KO FOR COPS; Police to Pay Victim Pounds 40k
Byline: JON KELLY
A YOUNG black boxer arrested by police and sprayed with CS gas after HE was attacked by racist skinheads, yesterday won pounds 40,000 compensation.
Francisco Borg, 22, won a civil action against South Wales Police after the force admitted he had been assaulted and falsely imprisoned.
Mr Borg, speaking outside court just two days after the 10th anniversary of the murder of black teenager Stephen Lawrence, said: "This case proves institutional racism is alive and well. There's no doubt about it."
In August 1997, Mr Borg, then 17, and his friend Marcus Walters, then 19, were attacked by thugs in Cardiff.
The skinhead gang had even tried to push a pit bull terrier through their car window.
The victims managed to flag down a police car and more officers were called. But instead of arresting the thugs, Mr Walters was handcuffed as he tried to fight off one of his attackers.
When Mr Francisco protested, he was held down, sprayed with CS gas and told by an officer: "It's your own fault. Shut up." Much of the incident was captured on CCTV.
Mr Borg and Mr Walters - neither of whom had been in trouble with the police before - were charged with violent misconduct.
The case against them was dropped on the day of their trial. Two of the men who attacked them were jailed.
Mr Borg brought a civil action for wrongful arrest, false imprisonment, assault, negligence and malicious prosecution against the force. …
