Ideas Invited to Help Beat Fumes Menace; AIR QUALITY MANAGEMENT ORDERS PASSED FOR POLLUTION-HIT STREETS

Byline: LUCY WILSON

PEOPLE who live and work close to two traffic-clogged streets in Coventry are being asked for their views on how to cut pollution from vehicle exhausts.

Coventry City Council's environmental health officers are concerned about emissions of nitrogen dioxide from vehicle exhausts in Burges, city centre, and Ball Hill, Stoke.

They are writing to householders and businesses in the areas before devising an action plan to clean up the air by cutting emissions.

Principal environmental protection officer Gordon Clamp said: "At every stage in the process, we are writing to residents and representatives of businesses in those areas.

"We have got a whole range of options to reduce the pollution from traffic. It's not just about reducing traffic; it could be encouraging a different type of vehicle into the area or it could be something as simple as changing the phasing of the traffic lights in Ball Hill to alter the traffic flow and reduce pollution.

"There is a range of potential options."

The issue was discussed at a recent council meeting headed by the cabinet member for service performance and support Cllr Phil Townshend (Lab, Lower Stoke).
