Dist. 54 to Promote Volunteerism

Schaumburg Township Elementary District 54 students, teachers and staff members will promote volunteerism and good will over the next several weeks in honor of Make A Difference Day.

This annual national day of volunteerism will be held today.

Keller Junior High School in Schaumburg kicked off the district's Make A Difference Day activities with a reading of a short story about the negative effects of teasing. Individual classrooms read "Bird Girl" by Clark Deleon. The story talked about hurtful and destructive teasing and a young girl's decision to stop it.

The reading was organized through the Students Against Fearful Environments Team at Keller.

Seventh-grade language arts teacher Laurie Shless, who helped organize the reading, said she felt the story highlighted that one person can make a difference.

"We are trying to do as many things as we can to promote change in our school," Shless said. "This did it in a positive way. The story is uplifting."

After reading the story, one student said he felt remorseful that he had teased someone earlier in the day.

Several other schools have collected donations for various causes in honor of Make a Difference Day.

Aldrin Elementary School in Schaumburg has collected donations for men and women in the armed forces in Iraq throughout this week.
