Sony Ericsson Handsets Combine Mobile Gaming with Console Gaming


Is it a cell phone or is it a new Game Boy device? Is it also a remote car controller?

This are the questions that may run through oneEs mind upon seeing an executive either killing time in an airport lounge or taking a five-minute break in his office.

Remember the days of seeing photos of the chairman, president or the CEO swinging a golf club in his private room? Well, it seems that is over, because he now has taken fancy on car racing in the privacy of his office.

We are not producing and selling cars, stressed Tong Kai-Loong, senior product manager for application and content, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications International AB, in response to press inquiries on the success of the CAR 100. oWe just wanted to make a point. It is our way of saying that Bluetooth can be fun and entertainment.o

This point is one can race is CAR 100, a match box sized remote control race car, using Bluetooth technology in the Sony Ericsson Z600 and T610/T630.

The CAR 100 is just a teaser.

For instance, let us take the Sony Ericsson P900. A wide range of downloadable applications and Java and Morphun games have been made available for the phone. This turns the P900 into a device that can do much more than voice calls.

Included in the product pack is a CD containing the popular racing game VRally in a 3D edition. The phoneEs JogDial is used for accelerating and together with the polyphonic sound, stereo headphones and 3D landscape details, the game play gets closer to a console-type of gaming experience. This provides for hours of fun, played either by a single player or racing against somebody over Bluetooth.

Sony EricssonEs effort in integrating mobile gaming with console gaming has been recognized by analyst firm Frost & Sullivan for customer education innovation for mobile gaming.

oThe ability to download and pay for games over the air is a new capability, which the majority of the market is either unaware of, or wary of. Sony Ericsson has, we believe, come up with a very innovative method of overcoming this. It was also the first company to look for a way of integrating mobile gaming with console gaming, as well as organizing events to promote playing games on handsets,o said Jan Sythoff, analyst, Frost & Sullivan. …
