Residents Move to Curb Speeding on Solana Road

Dixon, Drew, The Florida Times Union

Byline: Drew Dixon, Shorelines staff writer

Residents of Solana Road want motorists to travel slower through their neighborhood, and St. Johns County Sheriff's officials said they'll make drivers obey the speed limit.

Several residents complained about speeders at the Ponte Vedra Beach Municipal Service District meeting Monday night. Because there were so many complaints, the MSD board agreed to send a letter to sheriff's officials requesting deputies to patrol Solana Road more.

"We see the sheriff less than 15 hours a month," said Randy Brehm, who lives on Solana Road and recently posted a plywood sign outside his home that states, "25 mph, not 50," referring to the speed limit.

"Are we going to wait until one of our grandparents or parents loses a child?" Brehm asked, adding that drivers routinely exceed the speed limit on Solana Road.

Other residents said they pay taxes to the MSD specifically earmarked for sheriff patrols but rarely see any results.

Capt. David Christopher, the north sector commander for the Sheriff's Office who oversees Ponte Vedra Beach operations and serves as the liaison to the MSD, said he received the letter from the board this week. He said deputies provide patrols in the Solana Road area, but that revisions will be made.

"Just in January, there were 78 traffic stops in the boundaries of the MSD and 23 of them were on Solana Road from Sunset Drive to Florida A1A," said Christopher, adding that there may be need for a change in time for patrols.
