Makers of Newcastle United-based film Goal! are behind the most sexually-explicit British film ever made.

Director Michael Winterbottom defended Nine Songs when it was given its first screening at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film features Goal! star Kieran O'Brien and American student Margo Stilley having real sex.

The film has not yet been given a certificate, although Winterbottom conceded he could leave some of the more explicit material on the cutting room floor.
