WB, Japan Bank Extend Elementary Education Project; Books, Facilities to 8,558 Schools

Byline: SHIANEE MAMANGLU

The World Bank (WB) and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) have approved the extension of the Department of Educations Third Elementary Education Project (DepEd-TEEP), following the success of the program in the last two years.

WB sector manager for education and human development unit, East Asia and Pacific region, Christopher Thomas said the mission team, which he heads, will continue providing educational assistance to 8,558 schools in 23 provinces in the country where TEEP is implemented.

The extension of the program had been based on DepEds satisfactory performance, he said. There has been excellent progress in project implementation over the last two and a half years, with a dramatic turnaround in the peace and quality of implementation, he said.

Thomas commended Education Secretary Edilberto de Jesus and TEEP head Undersecretary for Finance Juan Miguel Luz and Dr. Yoly Quijano for supervising the project.

We are particularly impressed by the high level of professional standard and dedication to improving educational outcomes that we found on all levels from the school through the senior project management, he stressed.

Thomas noted that the schools they visited made good use of the resources they provided to improve student performance.
