The Saudi Arabian National Center for Science & Technology (SANCST) was established  in November 1977 as an autonomous scientific institution based in Riyadh, for the future development of science and technology in Saudi Arabia. In December 1985, the name of SANCST was changed to King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST) to better reflect its many responsibilities and functions.
KACST is entrusted with the responsibility for promoting and encouraging applied scientific research and coordinating the activities of scientific research organizations and centers according to Saudi Arabia's development requirements. Among its other responsibilities, is the evaluation and acquisition of foreign technologies while simultaneously developing the indigenous technology for the Kingdom.
To keep abreast of the latest developments in science and technology, KACST has expanded its range of mutual cooperative scientific activities at both regional and international levels. Regionally, KACST has well-established mutual activities with organizations in the Islamic countries, the Arab countries, and the Gulf countries.
Internationally, mutual cooperative activities include the U.S., China, South Korea, Germany, and France. Fields of cooperation include:
Space sciences and remote sensing
Construction materials improvement
Arabicization of technical terminology

NATIONAL (KACST) DATABASES
The KACST database retrieval system was initiated in 1982 and now has 14 databases, nine of which are used directly by the users. The remaining databases can only be accessed by authorized users. The databases  that can be retrieved under the KACST information retrieval system are described here:
* S & T Bibliographic Database (No. 10): Contains many thousand citations of journal articles, technical and government reports, and references in English dealing with science and technology in Saudi Arabia. The documents must satisfy one of the following criteria: authored/coauthored by Saudi nationals or published in Saudi Arabia, or result from research funded by a Saudi organization or focus on some sci-tech activity in the country.
* S & T Bibliographic Database (No. 4): Similar to the database described above but in Arabic. Contains more than 11,000 citations.
* S&T Terminology Database (No. 8): This database is a kind of electronic dictionary in four languages (Arabic, English, French, and German). More than 29,000 words are available in this database. Each word is given in up to four languages, with an explanation of its meaning and other related information.
* Project Database (No. 2): Contains information on research projects funded by KACST. It helps the Directorate of Scientific Research (DSR) in following up progress made by funded projects.
Reviewer Database (No. 5): Contains information about reviewers of projects that are funded by KACST. This database helps the DSR in choosing reviewers for research projects, considering profiles of both reviewers and subjects of the proposed projects.
Manpower Database (No. 6): Contains information on scientific, qualified, and professional manpower working in Saudi Arabia to help in selecting consultants and identifying common research interests.
Union List of Periodicals Database (No. 7): Contains periodicals available in KACST and many universities in the country. It is planned that this database will contain lists of periodicals at all major universities in Saudi Arabia.
Online Library Catalog (No. 11): Complete holdings of KACST Library are put in this database.
Current Awareness Database (No. 9): Contains tables of contents of all publications that are subscribed to by KACST Library. …
