FITNESS fads have a habit of travelling this way from the United States, and the latest is no different.

But unlike may of Hollywood's slimming trends, this programme has been tried and tested on real people. Even better, it promises great results from just eight minutes of sweat a day.

Fitness instructor Jorge Cruise's 8 Minutes in the Morning plan is a combination of easy-to-follow exercises and sensible eating advice.

Coming from California, it also has a new-age message and motivational help. After all, losing heart is the main reason why people fall off the weightloss wagon.

Jorge is regarded as the USA's top slimming guru, after his website helped three million people lose weight.

Arnold Schwarzenegger has even named him special advisor to the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. His experience and work with overweight clients formed the basis of the plan, which he says will see users lose two pounds a week. Jorge explained: 'There's a revolution going on in the field of weight loss. Cardiovascular exercise, aerobics, and dieting are out. Strength training is in.

'Experts agree that the fastest way to lose weight is to build lean muscle tissue, which burns fat. The problem these days is that no one has time to work out.

'Well, my 8 Minutes in the Morning programme has changed the rules. It will empower you to shed the pounds at home, and in just a few minutes a day.'

The plan has different exercises every day for four weeks, Monday to Saturday, with Sunday off for good behaviour.

Each day's exercise card comes with motivational tips and visualisation exercises and there's encouragement to reward yourself at each weightloss milestone you reach.

This is no quick fix but follow the plan long-term and you'll see a huge difference. Jorge has given us five of his recommended exercises and some helpful tips for beating those evil food cravings. All exercises should be preceded by his warm-up and followed with his cooldown.

JORGE'S TOP TIPS: A lot of people overeat not because they are hungry but simply because the food is there. To help yourself stick to the portions that correspond to your calorie selection, dish the correct portions on to your plate and leave the rest of the food in the kitchen.

Don't bring it to the table where you might be tempted to indulge in seconds.

Do the same with snacks. Buy your treats and cravings items such as crisps and sweets in small packs or individual servings so you won't be tempted to down a family-size package while you watch TV or talk on the phone. Also, never ever eat ice cream straight from the container.

Many of my clients (and many of you, no doubt) love butter, and most people don't want to give it up.

There is room for all foods in my Eat Fat to Get Fit plan, but I want you to try a simple switch for a few days. Fill a small plastic container with olive oil and put it in the refrigerator. The oil will harden, taking on the consistency of butter. Spread this on your toast instead of butter.

It will taste different at first, but after a few days, your taste buds will grow used to it and you will actually come to prefer the olive oil version. …
