Christian Bale has a shocking new look in his latest film, The Machinist, a dark drama that is being hailed as the new Donnie Darko.
And his frighteningly gaunt appearance hasn't been achieved by digital image manipulation: Bale shed around four and a half stone - one third of his weight - for the film.
Bale plays Trevor Reznik, a factory worker who hasn't slept in more than a year. As a result he's paranoid and confused. When an accident at work appears to be caused by someone who only exists in Reznik's mind, sinister notes start appearing in his apartment, and he's left trying to work out what is real and what isn't.
For the role, Bale embarked upon a stringent diet, even stopping socialising so there would be no temptation to eat.
