Adem Presents Homefires; rock&POP

In recent years, America's movement has rejected the pyrotechnics and stetsons stigma of mainstream country to create music with stylistic similarities to Nashville's product, but with none of the tackiness. Today something vaguely similar is happening to British folk.

Unlike US country, folk has never really had top-selling commercial acts for new groups to react against, but it has been saddled forever with probably the least cool image in music. That's now changing, thanks in part to the efforts of Adem Ilhan (right), who is organising two essential evenings of acoustic compositions this week.

Ilhan will play both evenings, showcasing the sparse, late-night sounds of gorgeous recent album Homesongs. He's joined on Saturday by a big name from folk's last major revival, Bert Jansch, as well as established favourite Beth Orton, Alan Sparhawk from Minnesota minimalists Low, Juana Molina, Micah P.

Hinson and the Memory Band.

Sunday's bill also features gloomy singersongwriter Bill Callahan, aka Smog, as well as Joanna Newsom, hotly tipped Willy Mason and Meon. Hefty beards optional.

Joss Stone

Is she cool or not then? Those poor souls who lie awake at night worrying about their musical taste have been torn by 17-year-old Joss Stone. On the one hand, she has sold enough copies of debut album The Soul Sessions to put her in the same bracket as tedious female warblers Dido and Katie Melua, and it's surely impossible to be a genuine soul singer when you're middleclass, blonde and come from Devon.
