The sixth study examines the impact of a health and media literacy curriculum on 4th-grade girls' understanding of the role of fat in growth and development and the effects of media on body image. Two groups of 4th-grade girls from two separate classrooms comprised the participants for this study. Nine girls participated in a media literacy intervention curriculum while the other eight girls served in the open discussion control group. Each group participated in seven 50-minute focus group sessions. The first session comprised a pretest, sessions two through five consisted of either the curriculum intervention (experimental group) or open discussion sessions (control group), session six was a posttest, and session seven was a delayed posttest. In the : pretest and two posttest sessions, a questioning route was employed that inquired about fat and images of women and girls in the media. All sessions were audio- and videotaped for later transcription and analysis. The authors were most interested in similarities and differences across the two groups and whether the intervention curriculum enhanced the intervention group's understanding of the role of fat and effects of media on body image. …
