Cross Country: Helen Holds off Arch Rival to Take Ladies' Title

Byline: MIKE DOOLING Athletics

HELEN LAWRENCE was the class act at the Merseyside Cross Country Championships at Wirral's Arrowe Park, a week after her classy run at Belfast's Reebok Challenge.

Facing competition from arch rival Jenny Clague, Helen went clear at the end of the first lap and eventually finished a minute ahead of Jenny, who held off fellow team member Christine Murphy in third and St Helens Gill Bacon in fourth.

With support from Hanna Carroll in fifth and Michelle Whalley seventh, the Harriers held on to their team title with Wirral second and Southport Waterloo third.

In the men's race, Harriers' Richard Burney was wary of the challenge from Liverpool & District winner Rob Berry, but his quick start gave him the breathing space he needed to clinch the individual title.

Southport's Berry worked hard for his second place with Harriers John McCole in third. The team title was a close run affair between Harriers and Wirral, the former eventually pipping it when Paul Harrison crossed the line in 33rd place.
