YOUNG Rebecca Heden has shown that the skills of the fine artist are easily transferred to any career - even that of a scientist.

The 19-year-old technician, whose training has been funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) Coventry and Warwickshire, has finished her NVQ level 3 and just started a foundation degree at Burton College in polymer technology, after leaving a fine art diploma course half way through, two and a half years ago.

But far from being at a disadvantage, the laboratory testing engineer says the practical and creative side of her art training have helped her in her new career. She would advise anyone who is having real doubts about the path they have chosen, not to be afraid of changing their minds.

Rebecca, from Albany Road in Earlsdon, Coventry, said: "It was definitely the right thing for me to do. Changing my mind early on would have saved me a lot of bother in the long run. I enjoyed the art course but I couldn't really see any future in it and this suits me much better. I think it has meant I have adapted well to the hands-on aspects of the job."

After leaving her art course, she researched science careers on the internet and discovered materials testing which she found fascinating.

After going through Yellow Pages and writing off to a few firms, she was offered an interview and then a job at JW Worsley (Coventry) in Buckingham Close, Bermuda Industrial Estate, Nuneaton.
