De Venecia Sets Up 'Press Freedom Fund' to Help Journalists

House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. yesterday donated P2 million to the "Press Freedom Fund" that will provide "reward money" to help solve the killings of journalists and finance a college scholarship program for children of slain journalists.
A former journalist himself, De Venecia said the Press Freedom Fund will also be used in conducting a series of conferences to explain the role of journalists and raise the standards of the profession.
"We are providing reward money, financial assistance for the prosecution of the killers, and fund for scholarships of children of the victims," the Speaker said in a press statement.
De Venecia noted the importance of the "reward money" for information on the killing of journalists because "without vital information, all the murders will remain unsolved."
"We should send strong signals that we want these killings to end and we want the killers captured, prosecuted and sent to jail so that even their companions will squeal on them," the Speaker said.
"The killings are no longer just a cause for national concern but have become an international embarrassment for the country as well. …
