THEIR marriage was undoubtedly a meeting of minds.
He is one of the world's best known authors. She is a university graduate who speaks five languages, as well as being a United Nations women's ambassador.
But as Salman Rushdie and his fourth wife Padma Lakshmi strolled hand-in-hand through Rome, her other less cerebral attributes were also apparent.
The almost transparent white top the 32-year-old model and movie actress chose to wear - without a bra to preserve her modesty - turned heads in the street and later at a reception for Rushdie in the city hall.
The mayor of Rome and other dignitaries had gathered there at the launch of a literary festival to hear 57-year-old Rushdie - who in 1989 was put under an Islamic fatwa, or death sentence, for his novel The Satanic Verses - expound on writing and society.
But, riveting as the author's observations may have been, the attention of many in the audience kept wandering to Mrs Rushdie. Some were left distinctly unimpressed. 'It was an utterly inappropriate way to
dress,' said a member of the diplomatic staff at the event. …
