'Crudely Designed' Explosive Device Is Found at Playground

PONTE VEDRA BEACH -- The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office is investigating an explosive device found Saturday at a playground.
The explosive was found about 11 a.m. near a portable restroom at the Dolphin Cove community playground on Dolphin Boulevard.
The Sheriff's Office bomb squad was sent in after a 911 call from a man who was visiting the park in the morning. The bomb squad then detonated the device in a steel canister designed to contain such explosives.
Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Chuck Mulligan said the office wouldn't release specific details about the explosive.
"We want to withhold specific investigative information so that only we and the people who built it know how it was constructed," Mulligan said. "This device was not constructed so that shrapnel could have been dispersed. It was not wrapped in a material that could have caused harm itself. But someone could have been hurt if it detonated."
The placement of the explosive device raises the profile of the case, Mulligan said.
"The fact that it was in a playground, it gives us additional areas of concern," Mulligan said.
