How Cherie's Chambers Made [Pounds Sterling]10m in a Year

Byline: STEVE DOUGHTY

THE takings of Cherie Blair's barristers chambers have topped [pounds sterling]10million for the first time, it was revealed yesterday.

The Matrix chambers, founded only five years ago to exploit Labour's human rights law, pushed its turnover up by more than five times the rate of inflation.

Its 'high point' was the Law Lords' judgment which overturned the Government's anti-terror laws that had allowed terror suspects to be held without trial, analysts said.

Each barrister working for the chambers is now bringing in average earnings of [pounds sterling]219,000 a year, The Lawyer magazine's breakdown said.

But senior lawyers at Matrix - its dozen 'silks' who like Mrs Blair hold the rank of Queen's Counsel - are likely to command much higher fees.

Experts said its 'high point' was the Belmarsh case last December in which Law Lords ordered terror suspects held without trial to be freed on human rights grounds. Three Matrix barristers took part in the hearing.

The magazine found that Matrix was second in the league table of chambers represented in hearings in the Lords, the most senior court in the country, with 21 appearances by its barristers.
