October Peace Series to Examine Iraq War

The religious, political and international aspects of the war in Iraq will be the topic of the October Peace Series at the Lombard Mennonite Church.
All are welcome to attend the free talks at 7 p.m. Fridays at the church, 528 E. Madison, Lombard.
While the topic is not easy, the church felt it was important to examine the multiple issues surrounding the war in Iraq and the United States' role in the Middle East, said David Martin, director of the West Suburban Faith-based Peace Coalition, which is co- sponsoring the series.
Before the war in Iraq began, churches from many denominations came out with "forceful statements" urging the Bush administration to use diplomacy rather than military force, he said.
"There was a strong voice from the church before the war hoping that it would not proceed," Martin said.
But once a war starts, societies tend to support the president's decision and the troops in harm's way. Now that two years have passed with no end to the war in sight, Martin said many, including church leaders, are starting to question the wisdom of going to war in Iraq.
"The costs are heavy in lives and dollars. Questions are appropriate," Martin said. "Churches are beginning to re-evaluate sitting on the sidelines. …
