Are You a Bright Young Thing? Money Mail Enterprising Young Brits Awards

TEENAGERS are full of brilliant and creative ideas.

Make yours count by taking part in our Enterprising Young Brits competition.

It doesn't matter whether you've started your own business in your bedroom, had an idea for a computer game or gone above the call of duty on a school project or coursework - we want to hear from you.

The Enterprising Young Brits awards recognise the creative and business talents of young people aged between 13 and 30.

There are five different categories, each offering a [pounds sterling]1,000 prize and the opportunity to meet Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown at a glittering awards ceremony in London next month.

This week we are focusing on the teen section of the competition.

Judges were highly impressed with the quality of entries from 13 to 19-year- olds last year. Finalists included 16-year-old Fraser Doherty (opposite) who runs his own successful jam and sauce-making business and a brother-and-sister duo who have set up a theatre production company.

It doesn't matter if your idea is not a money-spinner or even if it's not off the ground yet. As long as you have come up with a creative proposal or have done something inspirational - whether it's benefited you, your school or community - you can enter.

The Daily Mail Enterprising Young Brits competition is sponsored by Lloyds TSB Business.

The bank is in contact with thousands of young people around the country.

Its research into who young entrepreneurs look up to shows they are not as impressed with Sir Richard Branson and Sir Alan Sugar as adults are. Instead, they believe Donald Trump and Roman Abramovich best display the qualities needed for modernday business.

Of those young people who are considering setting up their own business, 10 pc are looking at the motoring industry, 9pc want to move into retail and 9pc want to set up a venture in media, marketing or PR.

Stephen Pegge, head of communications at Lloyds TSB Business, says: 'You are never too young to come up with an idea so don't be put off because of your age. With the right sort of guidance and advice, that idea could soon become a thriving business.' Enterprising Young Brits categories this year are: * Business entrepreneur - for those who have started their own business.

* Social and community - for those whose ideas and enterprise have benefited their local community in some way.

* Helping hand - a new award for those who have gone beyond the call of duty to help others in their place of work or people in their local community.

* Creative - recognising enterprise in the arts, fashion, etc.

* Teen - for anyone aged 13 to 19 who is making an idea happen.

Don't forget to send a 250 to 500-word summary of your idea or achievement with your entry form.

The Enterprising Young Brits competition is part of Enterprise Week which runs from November 14-20.

Enterprise Week is the foundation of a campaign called Make Your Mark - Start Talking Ideas, which is designed to tap into the potential of 14 to 30-year-olds. …
