Independence Day of United Republic of Tanzania
THE United Republic of Tan-zania celebrates its independence today. This country is located in southeastern Africa, bounded on the north by Kenya and Uganda, on the east by the Indian Ocean, on the south by Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia, and on the west by Zaire, Burundi, and Rwanda. The country includes the island of Zanzibar and Pemba and other offshore islands on the Indian Ocean, making it the biggest country in East Africa.
The Republic of Tanganyika in East Africa and the Republic of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanganyika, both of which had recently gained independence, combined themselves into a single nation, the United Republic of Tanzania, on April 26, 1964, with Zanzibar retaining internal self-government. Tanzanian culture is a product of African, Arab, European, and Indian influences.
The economy of Tanzania is primarily agricultural. About 80 percent of the economically active population are engaged in farming, forestry, and fishing. Agricultural products, such as coffee, cotton, and tobacco, account for a significant of annual exports.
