10,800 Pupils Join Toothbrushing Event in Bid to Beat Record

At least 10,800 pupils from eight schools in the National Capital Region armed with toothbrushes, toothpaste and small cups with water for gurgling trooped to the Luneta Grandstand of the historied Rizal Park in Manila yesterday morning for a shot at the prestigious Guinness World Records for one time toothbrushing by the most number of people.

Unmindful of the scorching heat of the sun, Grade IV to Grade VI pupils from the Pio Gomez, Justo Esteban, Epifanio de los Santos, Aurora Quezon, Rafael Palma, Jacinto Zamora, Fernando Ma. Guerero, and Sta. Ana Elementary Schools lined up the lawn area of the park in an attempt to break the record set by China more than two years ago.

In the latter, 10,240 individuals assembled in Ai Guo Road, Luohu District in Shenshen City in September 2003 for the purpose.

The Philippinesa figure, though, will have to be verified and validated by representatives from the Guinness World Records to confirm if it beat Chinaas number.

Organized by ColgatePalmolive Philippines (CPP), Inc., manufacturer of Colgate, the leading toothpaste brand in the country, in partnership with the Philippine Dental Association (PDA), Philippine Association of Dental Colleges (PADC), Department of Education (DepEd) and the government of the City of Manila, the simultaneous toothbrushing activity is the first ever mounted in the Philippines.

It aimed to make cavity protection more relevant to dental patients and schoolchildren and heighten oral health awareness as Filipino children at present have one of the highest decayed or missing or filled teeth (DMFT) in the world at 94 percent. Some 90 percent of these children with tooth cavity remain untreated.

"Colgate has always been truly privileged and honored to be a partner in improving the oral health of (the Filipinos)a[bar] and this year, the one-time mega brushing event further bolsters our thrust in increasing oral health awareness," said CPP, Inc.
