Judy Arenas takes a club when she walks outside her home in the 1600 block of Canterbury Court. Her husband, Fred, brings a golf club. Marla Goldberg - who lives on the same block - sounds an air horn and keeps her porch lights on all night.
The Arenas and Goldbergs joined about 20 of their neighbors to complain about brazen coyotes at an Arlington Heights village board meeting Monday night. Most of the neighbors worry about their dogs and live near Greenbrier Elementary School.
They're sick and tired of trying to get along with the native animals - they want the coyotes trapped and taken out of the area.
"I saw a coyote follow two kids walking to school," Goldberg told village trustees. "It was a foot behind the kids. I don't want something to happen."
For months, Arlington Heights residents have raised concerns about coyotes, but Monday was the first time the subject was brought up before the village board during the meeting's public comment section. After several residents complained about coyotes, Cmdr. Richard Niedrich, Sgt. Nick Pecora and two animal wardens took the residents to a separate meeting room to hear their concerns.
After the meting, Niedrich said he will meet with Arlington Heights Police Chief Gerald Mourning today to discuss trapping and removing coyotes, he said.
