Sea-View Apartments Will Take Pounds 75m Plan 'Up-Market'

A CONTROVERSIAL pounds 75m regeneration scheme for a Wirral resort will be taken "up-market" by the creation of residential apartments, according to a property specialist.

At the public inquiry into the Neptune scheme to redevelop New Brighton, Peter Mowbray, of Mowbray Gill, told the inquiry the intention was to create a "whole day experience" and a supermarket was key to bringing people to the area.

In his evidence he also said the developers were aiming for "international branded restaurants, in preference to the 'fast food' brands which tend to prefer drive-thru restaurants".

Mr Mowbray added: "The inclusion of residential elements will also help attract the restaurant and coffee bar users, and also helps take the whole scheme up-market."

The design of the ambitious plans to regenerate the former "playground of the North" had been revised after criticism about the appearance of some of the buildings prior to the project being given planning permission by Wirral Council last year.

Liverpool-based Neptune Developments caused controversy with plans to fill in the marine lake and build a supermarket and petrol station with a four-storey apartment block overlooking the sea.

The scheme also includes a new outdoor swimming pool, which could be an ice rink in winter, as well as a revamp of the Floral Pavilion theatre, a new marine lake, and leisure attractions, including a miniplex cinema and health and fitness centre, restaurants and cafe bars.

The public inquiry into the scheme was called by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister after Neptune received planning permission from Wirral Council for its development.
