Frail but Still Full of Fire, Brigitte Bardot at 71

HOBBLING on crutches, with every step an effort, Brigitte Bardot once again faced the spotlight yesterday for the sake of her beloved animals.
Now 71, hip problems have left her needing crutches and she acknowledges that she might not have much longer to live.
Campaigning for an end to Canada's annual seal cull, she said: 'Before I die I want to see this massacre ended.' Bardot, still fondly remembered as the ultimate sex kitten in films such as And God Created Woman, has not made a movie for 33 years.
Instead, she has devoted her life to animal welfare.
Yesterday, her mission took her from her home in the South of France to Ottawa, where she gave a 45-minute press conference.
'I am not crazy,' she said. 'I am pleading with you. This will probably be my last visit to Canada before I die.' Despite her infirmity she stood throughout the conference, speaking passionately in French. 'You cannot continue a genocide of animals like this,' she said.
Bardot, dressed entirely in black, posed underneath a poster of a bloodied seal, which can legally be hunted in Canada once it sheds its white coat at about two weeks. She did not disguise her anger during the speech, peppering it with expletives and at times bursting into tears. …
