31.5 M Workers Back to Work Today
After a long weekend, the country's 31.5 million public and private sector workers return to work today.
For the first time, the three-day non-working weekend was marked by two historic events, the 128th birth anniversary of the late Commonwealth President Manuel L. Quezon last Saturday, Aug. 19, and the 23rd death anniversary of Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr. yesterday, Aug. 21.
President Arroyo declared Ninoy's death anniversary a national non-working holiday pursuant to Republic Act (RA) 9256 which declared Aug. 21 of every year as "Ninoy Aquino Day." The birth anniversary of Quezon was also declared a holiday in Quezon City and the provinces of Quezon and Aurora.
The biggest bulk of workers, about 3.84 million, returning from the three-day weekend vacation are in Region 4 (Southern Tagalog), followed by Metro Manila with 3.63 million, and Region 3 (Central Luzon), with 2.635 million.
