Conservative 'Portrait'; A Conservative Government Is an Organized Hypocrisy. -- Benjamin Disraeli

Byline: Adrian E. Cristobal

BALAGTAS, Plaridel (Marcelo H. del Pilar), and Jose Rizal warned in cautionary epic, satirical essays, and novels about outwardly pious and pronouncedly conservative persons who were anything but. Florante was advised to beware of Adolfo's amiable facade. The spiritual tyrant Padre Damaso was revealed as Maria Clara's bastard father and Padre Salvi an onanist and rapist.

In the last century, Somerset Maugham, in the short story "Rain," later filmed with Rita Hayworth as Sadie Thompson, showed how a priggish preacher actually lusted for the former prostitute.

These portrayals gave skeptics the "insight" that while Liberals will permit everything that they won't necessarily do, Conservatives will prohibit everything that they actually do on the sly.

All this came to mind when Mark Foley, Republican congressman from Florida, resigned last 29 September to get treatment for alcoholism and "other behavioral problems." Apparently, the other problem had to do with his violation of the very law he helped write as co-chairman of the Congressional Missing & Exploited Children's Caucus.

The specific violation was his exchanges of lewd online communications with teenage pagers in the US Congress.
