People All over the World Need a Harmonic Social and Economic Progress of Truly Human Dimensions
ADDRESSING the members of the Cantesimus Annus Pro Pontifice Foundation, which was founded by Pope John Paul II in 1993 for religious and charitable purposes, Pope Benedict XVI noted how the group's attention has been focused on Asian countries characterized by strong economic growth, which does not always lead to a real social development. He also cited his observation of the group's focus on African nations "where, unfortunately, economic growth and social development face many obstacles.'' He stressed that what these people truly need, as people all over the world need, is a "harmonic social and economic progress of truly human dimensions.''
Noting that this year marks the 40th anniversary of Pope Paul VI's encyclical Populorum Progressio, Pope Benedict XVI pointed out how the great pontiff strongly affirmed that "development... cannot be restricted to economic growth alone.''
