Renewable Energy Program Sought
Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo and Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Villafuerte called yesterday for a program of discovery, development, utilization, and commercialization of new and renewable energy sources to help ease the people's economic burden due to the high cost of oil.
The two lawmakers filed House Bill 1958, the proposed Renewable Energy Act of 2007, aimed at achieving self-reliance in the country's energy requirements through a development program on biomass, solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, and ocean energy sources or hybrid systems.
For a country which is well-endowed with natural resources, its potential for harnessing renewable energy is limitless. Unfortunately, they said, the country's efforts to tap this resource is inadequate as shown by its continued reliance on fossil fuels, particularly imported oil whose prices are not only volatile but are dictated by market forces beyond its control.
It would be a disservice to the people if no serious steps are done to explore the country's potentials to the fullest and utilize renewable energy, according to Congressman Arroyo, chairman of the House Committee on Energy, and Congressman Villafuerte.
