Research : Iter Fusion Energy Team Complete


The ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) Preparatory Committee,aholding its first meeting in Cadarache (France) on 14 July since the initialling of the ITER Joint Implementation Agreement on 24 May, approved the nominations for the organisation's top management structure.

Since the Director-General, Kaname Ikeda, is Japanese, the Deputy Director Generals were proposed by the six other delegations. Wang Shaoqi, former Director-General for the Chinese Department of International Cooperation in Science and Technology, will be responsible for administration. Carlos Alejaldre from Spain, former Director-General for Technology in the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education, will be responsible for safety and security. Russian-born Valery Chuyanov, with many years' experience in international scientific cooperation, will head the Fusion Science and Technology Division. Gary Johnson from the United States, an expert in managing experimental installations with previous ITER experience, will be in charge of the tokamak (magnetic fusion energy) systems. Central engineering will be under the responsibility of Yong Hwan Kim from Korea who played a leading role in establishing the long-term national nuclear fusion R&D programme. Finally, Dhiraj Bora from India,aactive in plasma physics research for over 25 years and currently project leader for the ADITYA tokamak, will head the control/heating and current drive/diagnostics division.
