More Support for Livestock Industry Sought by Leaders

ROSALES, Pangasinan -Livestock industry leaders here appealed to Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap "to give more support to livestock at par with crops," saying "it is a much better earner."
Expressing their sentiment through the organizers of the week-long Agriculture Expo 2008 which ended last Wednesday, the livestock raisers cited Region 1's leadership in livestock production, "which can still be quadrupled with more government incentives."
The expo organizers led by Engineer Rosendo So, president of the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce in Eastern Pangasinan, had earlier exhorted rice producers to produce more amidst speculations on food scarcity which could come as a result of reports of exports cancellation by Vietnam and Thailand.
On livestock day, Tuesday, the expo tackled the profitability and problems of the livestock raisers with Ms. Marilyn Lilasan, a national awardee in goat raising by the Philippine Council for Agriculture Resources Research of the Department of Science and Technology, as resource speaker.
She spoke on nutrition for swine and goats, profitability of livestock raising, while Dr. Jose Lino Castro Jr., corporate manager of Elanco, and Director Dave Catbagan of the Bureau of Animal Industry, discussed the government's genes' upgrading of local livestock. …
