Banned Driver Lied after Fatalling Reversing into Girlfriend's Toddler Son on Drive
A banned driver who lied to emergency services after killing his girlfriend's son while reversing his van off her drive was jailed for nine months yesterday.
Andrew McGregor and former partner, Victoria Dobson, told police and hospital staff 21-month-old Sean Dobson Purchase had been killed by a hit-and-run driver.
The couple, who separated following the tragedy, pleaded guilty last month to attempting to pervert the course of justice in the hours after the accident in Coseley, Dudley.
Judge Michael Dudley, at Wolverhampton Crown Court, sentenced Dobson, 23, to a six-month jail term suspended for two years.
McGregor was given a six-month term for perverting the course of justice and consecutive three-month sentence for driving while disqualified.
The court heard Dobson, of Poole Crescent, Coseley, and McGregor, 30, of Willis Pearson Avenue, Bilston, rushed Sean to hospital following the accident outside her home.
But Dobson opted to protect McGregor by telling staff Sean had been struck by a driver who failed to stop.
Mark Rees, prosecuting, said medical staff and relatives of the defendants were immediately suspicious of the claim, which the pair admitted was untrue the next day.
