RIPM: Online Archive of Music Periodicals (1800-1950)

Repertoire international de la presse musicale (RIPM) has evolved from an annotated index of important nineteenth-century music journals to a project that will offer detailed and complex full-text access to a large number of music periodicals published between 1800 and 1950. The authors discuss the background of the project, the funding, and the technology; make comparisons with similar indexing projects, and conclude with an overview of the forthcoming RIPM Online Archive of Music Periodicals (full-text).

Das Repertoire international de la presse musicale (RIPM) entwickelt sich von einem bibliographischen Nachweisinstrument fur wichtige Zeitschriften des 19. Jahrhunderts zu einem Projekt, das detaillerten Volltextzugang zu diesen Zeitschriften aus den Jahren 1800-1950 bieten wird. Die Autoren erortern den Hintergrund des Projektes, die Finanzierung und dessen technische Umsetzung. In 2006 RIPM (Repertoire international de la presse musicale) celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary, the publication of its 200th volume (the first volume appeared in 1988), a database containing over 500,000 annotated records, and the birth of the RIPM Online Archive of Music Periodicals (full-text) which is the subject of this article.
RIPM (Repertoire international de la presse musicale) provides annotated indexes to nineteenth- and twentieth-century music journals, through its publications RIPM In Print, RIPM Online and RIPM on CD-ROM, (2) and preserves music journals, primarily on microform, in the RIPM Archive of Music Periodicals. The impetus for the creation of an inventory dealing with the musical press came in the 1970s initially from scholars working in the field, and specifically from their collective sense of frustration, not only when attempting to locate material within a journal but also when faced with answering even the most elementary questions about the press: who (apart from a few prominent names) are the most informative critics; which journals (apart from a few obvious titles) are most likely to be of interest to the music historian; of the specialized music journals, which tend to chronicle musical life, which are of general interest, and which focus on specific subjects? It is fair to say that the feeling of inadequacy shared by many when searching for materials and for the answers to such basic questions led to the recognition that the time had come to deal with the documentary wealth of the press in a systematic manner. There were 3 ongoing "R" projects, (4) RILM, RISM, and RIdIM, when, in the early 1980s, a proposal for creating this fourth "R" project was presented to the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres, and soon thereafter to the International Musicological Society. Both organizations strongly endorsed the idea--which had in effect been circulating since the 1930s--of providing access to this immense documentary resource of immeasurable value.
