Crosscutting Aspects of Technology Fuel ITC Vision for Future Efforts

The Plano, Texas, region is populated by numerous high technology companies, including telecom giant Verizon, an NLC Corporate Partner, and information technology pioneer EDS. Site visits to these corporate headquarters were especially valuable to the members of the Information Technology and Communications Steering Committee (ITC) during its recent meeting because of their focus on broadband deployment and the digital television conversion.
Under the leadership of Chairman Jim Haggerton, mayor, Tukwila, Wash., the committee heard from Lyle Ishida representing the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Ishida reported on the completion of the digital television signal transition in pilot city Wilmington, N.C. earlier in September. He further outlined a wide array of strategies being implemented by the FCC to inform the U.S. population about the digital television signal transition on February 17, 2009.
Local officials are concerned that large numbers of citizens are neither aware of nor prepared for the transition to digital television.
