Culture and Learning in the Context of Globalization: Research Directions


CULTURE AND LEARNING IN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBALIZATION: Research Directions. Lain, W. S. E., Review of Research in Education, 2006, 30, 213-237. How should we study culture and learning in a global context? According to Lam, we have to move beyond traditional and historical views of culture and learning. She begins by reviewing some historical models of research on culture and learning, which include the cultural deficit and the cultural affirmation models. Then, she points out problems related to research based on these two models. Her major point appears to be that culture is seen, in these two models, as static and not fluid. She suggested adopting a social practice and cultural-historical approach "to look at how individuals develop and assume particular cultural practices and affiliations through their history of engagement in multiple, changing, overlapping, and conflicting communities" (p. 216). Using this approach, cultural practices are seen as active. We can consider "diverse social groups and the heterogeneous sets of cultural knowledge, skills, and competence that are acquired in the process" (p.
