Ballina Community Action Celebrates Two Victories
WHAT a momentous day for Ballina Shire! Last Wednesday saw the completion of one significant project, and the commencement of another.
In 1995 a number of community groups involved in caring for aged and disabled people came together in Ballina to discuss how to meet the needs of the aged and disabled populations. The project was started with $500,000 of HACC funding to relocate Harmony House.
Over many years of discussion, lobbying and planning, those passionate about the project kept up the pressure.
Tribute must be paid to Mary Gutherie and Doug Stinson, for their vision and passion. Ballina Shire Council, through councillor committees and staff involvement, was supportive from the beginning, but funding gaps were ever-present.
MP Janelle Saffin's diligent work ensured Federal funding was received, and with a wonderful bequest by Bernice Kentwell, the project finally got 'legs'.
