Look Cool in the Heat; BEAUTY TIPS STYLISTS' SECRETS HOT NEW PRODUCTS; Even If You're Confident You'll Last the Pace on Summer's Hectic Social Circuit, Are You Sure Your Make-Up Can? Short Answer: Only If It's Long-Wear

Byline: Laura Bermingham

Summer means a dizzy round of social events such as weddings, parties and race meets - most of which are long, drawn-out affairs that would challenge even the most heavy-duty slap - and it's a tall order to keep your make-up looking picture-perfect all day long.

Even on sun holidays, many of us feel naked without a touch of make-up, but sadly high temperatures are the sworn enemy of powder and paint. Waterproof mascara holds better than regular, but up until this season there have been few other products that offer long wear with great colour and coverage.

FIRST BASE

Estee Lauder has led the long-wear market with the iconic Double Wear foundation for almost 15 years now. It marries wonderful coverage with great durability, but some find the formulation rather heavy. So last year the company rethought the formula, launching Double Wear Light -- and had a major hit on its hands! This light liquid foundation, [euro]34, sits like a second skin on the face, is oil- and fragrancefree and has an SPF 10. Teamed with a matching long-wear concealer, [euro]23, Double Wear really lasts the course -- around 15 hours, no matter what your skin type or the weather on the day.

One of the most beneficial aspects of longwear make-up is the fact that most quality formulations include a hydrating factor but no oil. This means they continually keep the skin hydrated but that women with oilier skins won't find the product suddenly sliding down their face. Most good long-wear foundations and concealers allow natural oils to pass through the make-up (just blot it gently with a tissue) but the foundation will still remain in place for many hours.

Dior is another favourite brand for fans of longwear make-up, and DiorSkin Forever Extreme Wear foundation, [euro]41, is proving a major hit with women who want a 'natural' look.

Meanwhile, fans of compact foundations love YSL's Matt Touch Compact SPF 20, [euro]49 -- this fine powder works well on most skin types.

On the budget end of the spectrum, Maybelline offers Superstay Silky, an incredible long-wear foundation that gives matte coverage, is easy to apply and looks natural on the skin, [euro]14.99.

FACE FIXERS

In April, Estee Lauder expanded the long-wear range to include eyeshadow, [euro]20, and pencils, [euro]24.50 (see below), which use silicone technology to give the shades better hold and true colour without fade. Clinique's Quick Eyes, [euro]19, for me is the perfect summer make-up item. It sets in seconds, letting you get on with having a great night out, and will stay put... whatever hour you get home!

Miss Sporty's Fabulously Creamy Blush in Bare, [euro]3.65, is perfect for highlighting sunkissed summer skin. Finally, for lips, Rimmel's Lasting Finish Intense Wear Lipstick can't be beaten on price, at [euro]6.25, and has 24 shades to choose from.

Crabtree & Evelyn has just launched three heady aromatherapy body-care collections. Named Relaxing, Revitalising and Purifying, they contain excellent natural ingredients from around the globe. Choose from divine body washes, polishing scrubs and lotions priced [euro]15-25.

The search is on for the new face of clothing label Simply Be. Entrants must have their details in by July for a chance to win this modelling contract plus oodles of prizes including clothes, a holiday and spending money! …
