BRUNSWICK -- Gov. Sonny Perdue christened Golden Isles Career Academy a "bridge to the future" for high school students and adults seeking their fortunes in a world demanding highly skilled workers.
"This is a bridge over which many people will travel to make their lives and their communities better," Perdue said Wednesday at the grand opening of the public charter school.
Perdue shared the dais with a host of city, county and state elected officials, community leaders, business owners and educators who then toured the new school at Brunswick-McBride Industrial Park.
The academy will provide career preparatory training for Glynn County high school students, and college programs for people of all ages in at least 18 career fields including culinary arts, criminal justice, agriculture, cosmetology and health care science.
It is a partnership of the County Commission, school board, southeast Coastal Georgia business and industrial community, and Altamaha Technical College.
The academy enhances the community and "stands for the power of human capital," Perdue told the crowd of about 250 people who packed the lobby of the school, which was built on time and nearly $1 million under its $19.5 million contract price.
It will be a bridge leading students to a more prosperous career, while fulfilling the needs of a wide variety of businesses, industries and professions for work-ready employees, he said.
"This is a human capital bridge to get them where they want to go that we've never had before," said Perdue. "This is an opportunity ... a bridge to the prosperity of the future."
The students' success will be Georgia's success as well, he said. …
