Churchs Chicken and Bingwa Software Provide Schools with Mathematical Heritage Series

Churchs Chicken and Bingwa Software Company have partnered to increase students' math skills through a special edition of Bingwa Mathematical Heritage[R] Series. Using diverse role models such as Madame C.J. Walker, George Washington Carver, Hala Moddelmog the president of Churchs Chicken and Manuel Lisa, the series teaches math skills while enhancing cultural awareness and increasing self-esteem.

In conjunction with Churchs' Adopt-A-School program, the company has donated the software and its companion teacher's manual to 700 of its 850 adopted schools. The special edition series was developed for fifth and sixth grade students and is provided to schools as part of Churchs' Black History Month program.

The software program features historical information on the role models, their careers and their achievements. Students learn math while completing lessons in which role models are featured in various simulated business and workplace scenarios. The interactive software is designed to help educators integrate technology into their mathematics instruction, while increasing children's cultural and business awareness. It attempts to improve test scores and enhances self-esteem in children by highlighting minority and female role models within the math lessons.

"Bingwa is committed to providing to providing quality educational software that give all children the opportunity to achieve," said James Curry, Bingwa's co-founder and new chief executive officer. "Bingwa is honored to have fostered this partnership with a company which has a strong record in the African American community."

Founded in 1993, Bingwa--Swahili for champion--has created interactive software products that are used in school systems across the nation. The series introduces 16 different role models and covers lessons for pre-school aged children through children in middle school. The Reverend Jonathan L. Weaver spoke to employees at the Peace Corps headquarters in Washington, D.C., on February 3, 1998, kicking off the Peace Corps' celebration of African American History Month. Weaver, pastor of the Greater Mount Nebo AME Church in Upper Marlboro, Md., spoke about his work as president of the Collective Banking Group, a non-profit group that works to establish covenant relations between member churches and financial institutions in the area. Since Weaver helped found the group in December 1995, the four banks that have signed agreements have loaned more than $30 million to church members, empowering the members to buy homes, increase the size of their businesses and provide capital for other vital needs.
