Searsmith, Kelly, Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts
The University of South Florida-Tampa Library's commitment to the study of science fiction and fantasy is apparent in the Science Fiction Symposium it has hosted each spring since 2005 with USF's Humanities Institute. The annual symposium promotes the study of science fiction and fantasy, as well as USF's growing collection in these fields.
USF holds more than 15,000 titles, including over 220 reference and critical materials and over 2,000 "golden age" paperbacks, many in the circulating collection, with others in the Special Collections Department. Some of these date to when science fiction bibliographer and scholar Neil Barron worked there. The library also holds 350 AV titles and 61 magazine titles, which include pulp magazines dating back to the 1930s.
The Special Collections Department holds exclusively 8,240 dime novels (partially catalogued) and over 170 titles related to The Frank Reade Weekly Magazine and The Frank Reade Library (fully catalogued). Archived there, too, are 200 linear feet of collections that feature Harry Harrison, Mike Resnick, Piers Anthony, and Frederik Pohl (with a special strength in Pohl's post-1980s work).
The library describes its science fiction and fantasy collection as "developing along the lines of current strengths (Golden Age American Science Fiction), and expanding in the direction of Latin American and Caribbean writers, especially works focusing on gender and sexuality." Staff members are "also interested in editions of Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon, which features Tampa as the launch site for the Columbiad." Related works held by the library are the first Esperanto editions of R.U.R. and A Princess of Mars.
