Students Seek Sacred Texts
LAST week as part of their study on sacred texts in Study of Religion (SOR), students travelled to a Buddhist Temple and visited the Australian Catholic University.
There was so much to see, do and experience.
It was a sensory experience with the buildings having a pagoda style to them, with terracotta rooms and decorative sculptures.
The dragons on the roof tops, being the link between earth and heaven within their beliefs, were a prominent feature.
The buildings were decorated ornately with dominant colours of gold, being the colour of enlightenment, and red, which is an auspicious or lucky colour within the Chinese culture.
The temple is linked to a Buddhist school in Taiwan.
Students were able to meditate, have a calligraphy lesson and drink green tea, which we now know comes from the camellia plant.
The complex ideas about enlightenment, karma and the importance of compassion were all discussed.
They learnt about the different types of Buddha statues, the significance of the posture, what they carried and how they related to the beliefs and practices of Buddhists.
The afternoon was spent at the Australian Catholic University where students were able to attend an Introduction to Scripture lecture with first-year students.…
