It Was All Pot Luck and Plane Sailing Plane; Leftover Cash Offered to Small Groups

Byline: TOM MULLEN

COMMUNITY groups across the North East are being invited to share a pot of pounds 300,000 in left-over Government cash.

The money, available to small organisations across the region, had been set aside by the last Labour government.

And it is still up for grabs as the new Coalition leadership is in the process of setting out its economic vision for the country.

A slice of the funding is available for any community or voluntary group that has a turnover of less than pounds 30,000, has been going for over a year and has kept a full set of accounts.

Called the Grassroots Grants programme, the scheme was designed to boost local organisations and improve amenities in our suburbs, villages and towns.

West Park Veterans Bowling and Social Club in South Shields is just one group to have taken already advantage of the offer.

They scooped pounds 575 to re-cover their snooker table and buy new snooker and billiard balls after submitting a successful application.

Club member Jim Hoggarth said: "It's great that we have received this money from the Grassroots Grants programme. A little bit really does go a long way for small groups like us."

And Gateshead Model Flying Club have been given two grants of pounds 1,274 and pounds 1,452 to buy new equipment and even a barbecue.

Grants are available to groups across Newcastle, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Northumberland and Sunderland.
