LNG Announcement a Boost for Gladstone; Project Expected to Create Thousands of Construction and Operational Jobs


NOW is the time to take advantage of the liquefied natural gas industry (LNG).

For those in business and those who want to get into business, Sunday's announcement of the BG Group's Final Investment Decision is Gladstone's opportunity to shine.

From established businesses already playing the LNG game, to businesses looking to take advantage of the opportunity and expand current services, if you want to seize the day, now is the time.

Executive vice-president of BG Group and managing director of the Queensland Gas Company (QGC) Catherine Tanna said there would be 5000 jobs in construction until 2014 with work from the Surat Basin to Gladstone.

"There is a detailed manpower build-up plan and we have very clear aspirations for the 1000 operational jobs for those who live and work in the host communities," Ms Tanna said.

"Over the next four years, the project will create an estimated 5000 construction jobs and, from 2014, nearly 1000 jobs in operations."

Gladstone Engineering Alliance (GEA) chief executive Karen Porter has been at the forefront of industry tenders for the LNG industry, including QCLNG.

Ms Porter said over the next couple of years the QC LNG project would provide opportunities for construction workers across a broad range of technical, trades, and support roles.

"It is evident both QC LNG and Bechtel Oil Gas and Chemicals are ramping up their respective workforces here in Gladstone with a number of senior engineering, environmental, contract and procurement roles currently being advertised," Ms Porter said. …
