Gov't-Civil Society Covenant Highlights Bohol's Prosperity Fair


TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, Philippines (PNA) - Even staunch government critic, the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan), among other members of civil society, signed a Covenant on Genuine Prosperity in Bohol along with provincial officials during Prosperity Fair 2010, marking the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Day here.Governor Edgar Chatto and Vice Governor Concepcion Lim led provincial officials in the signing ceremony during the opening program of the Prosperity Fair 2010 at the Bohol Cultural Center Friday.Gloria Casabal, immediate past Executive Director of the Bohol Alliance of Non-Government Organizations and University of Bohol Community Development Foundation Executive Director, together with Bayan-Bohol Chapter Secretary-General John Ruiz, and Kabatan-Onan Para Sa Kalambuan Sa Nasud (KAPAKANA) Secretary-General Analou Estrella represented civil society in the ceremonial unrolling of the covenant."The people should have an active role in forging development," said Ruiz, adding that "as we struggle to eliminate poverty and injustice to achieve prosperity, we must empower the people to stand for their rights and only then can we be assured that the development we are pushing for is really for the people."To ensure that the people will have an active role, he pointed out that their rights should be upheld and protected.
