THE editor of The Archers accidentally disclosed that one of the show's best-loved characters had died hours before the episode revealing this was aired.
Fans had been left on tenterhooks on Sunday when Nigel Pargetter fell from the roof of Lower Loxley Hall at the climax of the much-hyped diamond jubilee episode.
In true soap opera tradition, listeners were left with a cliffhanger when they were not told whether he had lived or died. That was left to last night's edition of the Radio 4 show.
But when editor Vanessa Whitburn was asked about the 60th anniversary edition on the Today programme yesterday morning, she said: 'Obviously, there's a birth and a death and that's quite iconic, I think.' Told by presenter Evan Davis that she had given the plot away, Miss Whitburn backtracked, saying: 'There is a birth and a potential death - that's what I said.'
