Poetry Matters ESRC Seminar Series 2011-2012
The Poetry Matters, ESRC Seminar Series began on 11th January 2011. The series, led by Dr Sue Dymoke (University of Leicester) and co-convenors, Dr Anthony Wilson (University of Exeter) and Professor Andrew Lambirth (University of Greenwich) has the full support of the English Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy and two former laureates, Sir Andrew Motion and Michael Rosen. Both Michael Rosen and Andrew Motion will be participating in the University of Leicester seminars.
Why is this important?
Andrew Motion has told us 'poetry matters and that poetry needs people to say that it matters'. No such seminar series with has existed before and it comes at a time when opportunities for creative, risk-taking and the professional development of English teachers in schools are once again under threat. Carol Ann Duffy was first encouraged to write poetry by an inspirational English teacher. This seminar series aims to create a dynamic forum for discussion that will lead to a framework for further research, publication and dissemination in the field of poetry education. It will explore fundamental questions concerning the demands that reading, writing, speaking and listening to poetry present to learners and teachers and how these demands are addressed in initial teacher education and continuing professional development. The series brings together academics who research in this field and will provide opportunities for colleagues in schools, local authorities, colleges and arts organisations and poets to network and explore new approaches to teaching and researching poetry.
The Poetry Matters series will create a research database on poetry education which will explore different research methodologies and poetry matters of concern. International collaboration will be initiated between the UK, Europe and North America and a unique poetry wiki will ensure continued dissemination and collaboration.
