MWSS, Concessionaires Draw Roadmap for Water Supply and Waste Management

MANILA, Philippines - The government is drawing a roadmap for water and waste management that will ensure adequate water supply in the metropolis by 2015 and enable wastewater's disposal in compliance with environment sustainability standards. The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) targets to come up with this roadmap before the end of the year in collaboration with concessionaires Maynilad Water Services Inc. and Manila Water Co. Inc."The roadmap will strengthen synergy, revisit standards, and challenge old practices," according to MWSS in a statement.A top priority is the identification of alternative water sources. A study on seven alternative water sources that will address a demand gap estimated at 500 million liters per day by 2015 is ongoing and will be completed by yearend.MWSS has earlier signed a memorandum of agreement on the rehabilitation of Angat dam, the first of such rehabilitation program since it began operating in 1968.While MWSS has been rocked with charges of bloated budget for unnecessary expenses, the Angat rehabilitation signals a start of a comprehensive reform in its spending."The budget for consultancy on structural assessment has been slashed to P44 million from P66 million. The second phase of the Angat Water Utilization and Aqueduct Improvement project has realized savings of P79 million," it said in a statement.MWSS Administrator Gerry Esquivel said MWSS's improved financial management is part of its "transformational plan" which he submitted early this year."We have been laying the necessary groundwork for plans to flourish while resolving current issues and implementing urgent parallel transformation. We have been careful in replacing resigned board members with people that have the professional qualifications suited to the strategic development program of the agency," Esquivel said.
