Mathematicians and Scientists Are Thriving at Durham School


AT Durham School, a leading Boarding and Day Independent School in the North East for girls and boys aged three to 18 years, pupils are thriving at mathematics and the sciences and bucking the trend by opting for subjects like physics at A Level.

"Effective science teaching in schools is essential, both for ensuring a satisfactory degree of scientific literacy in society at large, and for equipping the next generation of scientists and engineers to progress into higher education and beyond," a main finding in the recent report by Professor the Lord Broers, Chairman of the House of Lords Select Committee on Science and Technology. Pupils at Durham School enjoy specialist science teaching all the way from the Prep School to the Sixth Form and the younger pupils also enjoy the weekly science club.

At GCSE separate sciences have recently been introduced with a move to the IGCSE syllabus, which is more traditional and a better preparation for A level. Pupils use online textbooks rather than paper ones and wireless internet in the labs.

Many Durham School pupils now take Mathematics a year early at the end of Y10 and this summer's results showed virtually 100% gaining an A*/A. Pupils then study statistics in Y11 as a separate GCSE.

Enriched and inspired science teaching is encouraging more Durham School students to opt for the sciences and mathematics.

Science and mathematics are proving to be very popular this year at A Level with two groups for each subject (it is nationally very rare to have that for physics) and students are also opting for mathematics and further mathematics.
