Six Months since Kochie Came by. Words of Advice a Transformation; Catching Up with the Winners of a March Business Makeover with David Koch

Byline: Rebecca Marshall rebecca.marshall@scnews.com.au

HALF a year ago, a man named David Koch flew into Maroochydore to speak at the Sunshine Coast Business Expo and spend an afternoon mentoring two winners of a makeover competition run by Better Business.

The TV star and business analyst joined a panel of bright business minds in Youi Insurance chief Howard Aron, former Maroochy chamber president Myles McNamara and expert consultant Rod Richards in delivering advice and tips on how to change, grow and prosper.

The winning businesses were Amici Cafe in Caloundra and Coastal Business Insurance in Maroochydore.

Six months on, as promised, we have checked in on their progress and what's changed since the day they met Kochie.

AMICI CAFE

Owners Sarah Spotz and Jason O'Brien were killing themselves working 100-plus hours a week on the Knox Ave cafe back in March.

The workload was taking all the joy out of the business and something had to give.

C[pounds sterling]The biggest change has been in terms of hours,C[yen] Ms Spotz said.

C[pounds sterling]We only do breakfast on weekends now, not every day, and that has been huge.

C[pounds sterling]We've gained some sanity time back and it's allowed us to spend more time on the business instead of constantly being stuck in it.

C[pounds sterling]We are still working on that balance, but it's much better.

C[pounds sterling]More than anything, we've got more confidence in what we're doing.

C[pounds sterling]This has given us direction and we feel really good about where we're going.C[yen]

Mr O'Brien said among the changes initiated in the shop were adding more warmth and neutral tones to the decor, reducing wastage in the kitchen and eliminating breakfast on weekdays.

C[pounds sterling]We had some really good mentors. Since we met, Howard has come back in to have a chat or something to eat,C[yen] he said.

C[pounds sterling]He is always asking his friends in the industry about things we could try to boost our turnover.C[yen]

Amici also won the Caloundra Business Award for hospitality business of the year last month.

C[pounds sterling]There are a lot of great restaurants in Caloundra and it was a great feeling to be on top,C[yen] Mr O'Brien said.

C[pounds sterling]Consistency is the key.
