Investing in Employee Health Is in Everybody's Interest


Health Exchange CIC (Community Interest' Company) is a social enterprise dedicated to promoting health and wellbeing and reducing health inequalities across Birmingham and the West Midlands. Having become expert over the past five years at reaching into Birmingham's diverse ethnic communities to provide health information to people in ways that they trust and believe in, Health Exchange is now turning its attention to helping hardpressed employers and employees take control of their health.

Demanding work schedules, reduced staff numbers, challenging targets and busy personal lives can lead many employees to reduce the priority they place on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and on making positive choices to remain healthy. Often, as well as the individual, employers too suffer the effects of this in higher rates of sickness absence and long term sickness, and reduced productivity. It can also lead to increased workload for colleagues, leading to a downward spiral.

A recent study by Indiana Purdue University found that more than 85% of workplace sickness claims arose from unhealthy aspects of individuals' lifestyles. Other studies have reached similar conclusions. Clearly, investing in employee health is in everybody's interest.

Tackling Poor Health The West Midlands suffers some of the highest rates of poor health in the country, much of it associated with unhealthy lifestyle choices - including poor eating habits, lack of exercise, smoking and excessive drinking. …
